A fun and easy way to teach about the five senses is with a cookie bake! To prepare, make your favorite cookie dough or buy refrigerated tubes at the store. As you begin, give each child a walnut sized ball of dough and have them split it in half and make two smaller balls from it.
Ask how the dough FEELS. Is it hot, cold, soft, hard, smooth, or bumpy? Then talk about what the dough LOOKS like. What is its color, shape, and size?
Set a timer for the cooking time. As it finishes baking, ask what sound they HEAR when it goes off. Is it long, short, loud, quiet, high, or low? Next ask them to SMELL the freshly baked cookies. Is the smell pleasant or unpleasant?
Then comes the best part… TASTE the cookies when they are done and cooled! Ask the children if they are sweet, sour, salty, bitter, warm, cold, good, bad, soft, or hard?
Experiencing something is always a better teacher than just hearing about it, especially when it comes to our five senses. And who doesn’t love an excuse to make cookies?!
